Judging by color trends, it seems we're all dreaming of an island escape these days. Splashed on walls, textiles, and furnishings, Mediterranean-inspired hues are usurping indigo as the blue of the moment. In a room, these shades are at once peaceful and energizing—a little like a day on the water. WHITE BATHES most of the rooms in this beach house in South Carolina, but designer Kevin Isbell saturated the entryway, which doubles as a dining room, in blue. "It creates drama when you walk in but also makes the lighter rooms seem even more voluminous by contrast," he says. The key was finding a blue that didn't lean too dark. a grown-up play space
Lawn is overrated, if you ask interior and landscape designer Emily Janson. She'd much rather her yard feel like a swanky courtyard. Once her kids went off to college, she decided to finally ditch the kiddie playhouse and design the yard of her dreams, complete with a lounge, a dining room, and a fountain evoking European gardens. The project became a grand DIY that she and her husband, Skip, tackled with help from YouTube videos galore and kind souls at the local hardware store.
